WHAT IS BIOPHILIC DESIGN?
Biophilic design is the soulful integration of nature and architecture. It is an intentional response to our innate, biological need to connect with the natural world. While this need often lives beneath our awareness, it quietly shapes how we feel every day.
You may have searched the term biophilia and come across simple definitions such as natural light, a good view, a few plants. However, true biophilic design is so much more.
A Philosophy Rooted in Our DNA
The concept of biophilia was first introduced by German-American psychoanalyst Erich Fromm in the 1960s and later popularized by Harvard biologist Edward O. Wilson in his 1984 book Biophilia. Wilson defined biophilia as “the natural and intuitive tendency of human beings to focus on life and lifelike processes.” He believed that our spirit is woven from this connection and that our hopes rise on its currents.
This affinity is seen as a genetically ingrained need, rooted in our evolutionary history. Today—over 70 years later—it informs design decisions at every scale, shaping architecture and interiors around the world.
What if your surroundings could help you breathe deeper, think clearer, and feel more alive?
We go beyond incorporating nature. We aim to reconnect you with it.
At Aetheria Interiors, an Okanagan-based interior design studio, we help you rediscover and strengthen that connection through the power of biophilic design and the design process.
We create spaces that restore calm, vitality, and belonging through thoughtful, wellness-centered interiors. Whether at home or at work, it’s about more than adding plants or sunlight — it’s about supporting your nervous system and rekindling a sense of wonder and wholeness.
Our vision is to craft environments that make you feel alive, enhance well-being, sharpen focus, and, in turn, support longevity.
Have you ever considered how your life could change if your space truly supported your body, mind, and spirit as well as your beliefs and ethics?
Sustainable design reduces harm. Regenerative design creates healing.
Sustainability is a good start, but regeneration goes a step further. Design can either hinder or help the healing process, which is why we choose to design spaces that give back to both people and the planet.
Regenerative, human-centered spaces foster ecological balance and emotional grounding. As a result, it helps you feel connected and part of something greater.
Can the spaces you live and work in actively contribute to your well-being? Yes, we believe they can!

This design process is what we call THE AETHERIAL WAY.
The journey is a remembering. We are not separate from nature but are part of it.
Imagine a design process that felt restorative, inspiring, and deeply rewarding? We believe that it should be, which is why guide you through the many thoughtful decisions and meaningful choices with a deeper layer of consideration.
When a space engages more than one sense, it does more than look good, it becomes intuitive to experience. Thoughtful use of light, sound, movement, texture, and scent can improve concentration, orientation, and emotional comfort.
Inclusive by design – Spaces that speak to the senses.
This attention to the use of natural design elements is particularly beneficial for people with cognitive or neurological differences such as autism, ADHD, dementia, or sensory processing challenges. Research shows that multisensory environments can ease anxiety, support focus, and make spaces easier to navigate. (Spence 2020)
By layering sensory elements with intention, we create spaces that are not only functional and beautiful, but accessible, inclusive, and supportive of a broader range of human needs.
Design that catches the eye & stirs the soul.
When was the last time you felt truly connected to the natural world, even indoors? Regenerative, biophilic design transforms how you live, work, and feel. When your space truly supports your well-being, life flows more easily.
Your environment can change everything. Let’s design it together.[/arven_about_box]
